Make Your Own Beer
Beer, often called "the nectar of the gods", is as old as civilization itself. One of the most common and popular beverages of all time, it crosses all levels of life. Having been drunk by everyone from monks, slaves, average workers to world leaders and the rich.
In fact, beer is an integral part of our lives and history. Having been brewed in unique ways by dozens of countries. Served with meals, at celebrations; even to hail an upcoming battle. Then, as they do today, people enjoyed hoisting a beer with friends, had a beer to relax. In fact, drinking beer has been a form of recreation almost since time began. Local taverns and pubs eventually became a refuge for both the common and rich man alike. Not only a place to relax but a social spot to interact with friends and make new ones. Bottom line - beer became a communal drink.
Interestingly, European people were some of the first people to became skilled at the art of brewing. Well known for creating unique blends. It's thought, and often been said, countries in cold climates, such as England and Germany, drink more beer than those in warmer climates. Back then, beer was served warm. Just the thing to drink in cold, unforgiving weather. Yet today, in the U.S., and many other countries there's nothing like an ice cold beer to hit the spot.
It's not surprising that today people from every country around the world - regardless of culture or religion - drink beer. In short, you can walk into any tavern or pub, the world over, and order a beer. That said, today, there are nearly as many different types of beer as there are people who drink it.
How is beer made:
In it's purest form, beer is comprised of water, hops, malted barley and yeast.
Brewing, considered an ancient art, dates as far back as 2000 BC. To Mesopotamia. Where barley is thought to have been first cultivated. Once it was discovered to be a tasty, yet inexpensive, drink to create, the cultivation of barley began to spread. As did the drinking of beer itself.
The simple combination of barley, hops, water and yeast - used in different amounts - produces a variety of different types of beer. Ranging from pale, to sparking yellow, dark, fruity or rich reddish-brown beer.
Until the influx of Germans to America, in the 1830's to 1840's, Ales were the most popular types of beer in the U.S. But the arrival of the Germans brought decades old traditions along with great knowledge of beer making. Plus, it was around this time scientific interest in brewing beer came to the point where lager yeasts had been identified. A simple way to transport kegs of beer throughout America discovered. So brewers - known as beercrafters - were able to create, sell and have their beers delivered almost anywhere in the country.

Over time, home brew making became popular. Since it was easier, faster, home brewers began to develop their own unique types. Even their own mico-breweries. And, today, according the American Homebrewers Association, there are about 70 types of beers.
Here are the 11 most popular:
Lager: Lagers are light in color. Brewed slowly at low temps, they're a smoother, more mellow beer. And less alcoholic than most ales because they're high in carbonation. For best taste, these should be served chilled.
Ales: Ales are made with a type of yeast heated to very high temps. Because the yeast used ferments rapidly and rises to the top faster, it helps create a more fruity, aromatic beer. And real Ales are produced using old, traditional methods. Without pasteurization. Since Ales have lower carbonation, they're best served at warmer temps for optimum taste.
Amber: This beer is malty in taste. Because of the addition of specialty grains, and whether it's an ale or lager, the golden rich color of this beer tells you it's a much fuller bodied one.
Bitter: With the addition of tons of hopps, this beer is more dry and aromatic. But don't let the pale color fool you. It's strong in alcohol content. A favorite of Brits.
Dark Beer: To create Dark Beer, barley sits in a kiln for a much longer period of time. Thus it becomes darker, richer. It has a much deeper flavor created from the roasted grain.

Pilsner: This is the name given to the classic lager originally created and made in Czechoslovakia. This light beer is pale and golden-colored. And is the beer tons of American beer makers used as a model to create their own mass-produced types. Crafters of beer believe all Pilsners should be served very cold.
Fruity Beers: These beers are created by adding some type of fruit during the fermentation process.
India Pale Ale: The English originally created and brewed this beer to be shipped to India. The process used requires large quantities of hopps added to the mix. Which are not only used as a preservative, but to cover up any potential unique flavors which may develop during shipment to India.
Porter: This beer is bitter and dark. And one must cultivate a taste for it. Developed in England, it was considered a drink to nourish the bodies of manual laborers, such as porters. And where it got it's name.
